Introduction to Nepali Dhami-Jhankri Shamanism Workshop

Dhyangro drum

Nepal’s shamanism is a living tradition that has been in perennial flow for a long time—it is a way of life for many communities and groups. During this three-day program, participants will actively learn cosmology, the events of the creation of the universe, and the causes of disharmony and malaise from the traditional understanding of the Nepali Jhankri-shaman.

The Workshop

Under the expert guidance of Bhola Banstola, a 27th generation Dhami-Jankri Shaman, participants will embark on a journey of discovery. Through stories, myths, journeys, ceremonies, dance, and group rituals, Bhola will lead you to explore the elements of creation, the three worlds and fourteen levels (Tintri-lok Chaudha Bhuvana) of the Nepali upper and lower spiritual realms.

Participants will learn about the male and female spirits of the Dhyangro drum, a sacred instrument that plays a significant role in shamanic rituals. They will understand the primordial sound and rhythms it produces and how the spirits of Purusha and Prakriti work in unison or the union of the opposites to bring healing and harmony. The Jhankri uses unique rhythms from the Dhyangro drum in his or her work.

During the retreat, Bhola will guide you in exploring the practical aspects of Dhami-Jhankri shamanism.

You will learn about the elements of the shaman’s costume (Jala-mala, Jama-Pagari), the traditional way an altar (Thaan) is prepared and the art of making offerings (Chadaunu). Conventional perspectives on disease and illness will be discussed, and you will have an opportunity to invoke the water deity Jala Devi to create healing water.

Prepare to be transformed during this retreat. A healing mandala (Rekhii) will be designed with cosmic representations, and participants will perform healing rituals of ‘letting go’ and ‘removal’ as Khadga Puja. A spiritual cleansing and dancing ritual, a Shamanic Dance of Transformation (Jhankri-Naach) follows the Khadga Puja, promising a profound shift in your spiritual journey. On Saturday evening we will share a vegetarian meal after which Bhola will lead a fire ceremony, a ritual of release and reinvigoration.

To conclude the retreat, Bhola will impart a five-coloured thread (Pancha-Rangi Dhago) blessing of harmony, balance, and joy. This thread symbolizes the unity of the five elements. It is believed to raise the life forces for protection (Siir Uthaunu), a ritual that enhances the participants’ spiritual strength and resilience.

About Bhola

“My name is Bhola Banstola, a Jhankri Shaman from Nepal with an extended family lineage history and practice in Shamanism. I am a 27th generational shaman. My Shamanic practices were born through direct lineage transmissions from my grandfather and father, from both human and spirit teachers, from dream instructions, from my own transformative experiences, and directly from Nature’s wisdom and omens. My greatest wish is to preserve and share the Shamanism of my tradition, keep it alive, and bring it to new generations of practitioners. I also support Nepali traditional lineage education (param-para) and culture and help poor and needy children go to regular schools through my work and the kindness of others. I believe that shamans should always serve their community in the best way they can.”

Bhola graduated in Cultural Anthropology and spent many years with shamans in the Himalayan area (Nepal, India, Bhutan, Tibet), adapting shamanic techniques that allow him to be a “bridge” between ancient shamanic culture and modern vision.
